Wilkinson PLC

A chandelier manufacturing company, which has held the Royal Warrant by appointment to Her Majesty The Queen as glass restorers for 29 years, is among the finalists.

Wilkinson Plc, established in 1947, was based in London with a Mayfair showroom and a factory in Catford.

But it moved to the Grade II listed Wealden Hall House, Bredgar, five years ago and is now operated from an adjacent barn.

Specialising in English and European crystal chandeliers from the 18th and 19th centuries, the firm manufactures reproductions of the finest designs and restore some of the countries finest antique collections.

Not limited to traditional chandeliers, it also produces wall lights, lanterns and contemporary lighting.

Other services include cleaning, repair, metalwork removal, installation, rewiring, packing for shipping or storage.

Owner David Wilkinson said: “In addition we are able to undertake glass repairs, removing chips from wine glasses and ornaments to recreating glass items that are beyond repair out of newly blown glass blanks. We also supply replacement parts and a huge variety of lighting components from candles to chains.

“Most of our work is in London and the South East, but we regularly travel throughout the UK and further afield including the United States and Middle East.

“Many of our products are very expensive and take many months or years to manufacture.

“We looked at new ways of attracting business and have rented showroom space at the Furniture Cave in London’s King Road and this summer held a week of designer open days at our workshops which are both proving to be successful in winning new orders.”

In 2014 it received an order to manufacture 54 chandeliers for The Lanesborough Hotel in London after interior designers Alberto Pinto of Paris selected the company above all the competition.

The order, the largest in its history, allowed the firm to invest in a new freehold warehouse on the Eurolink, which in turn released more working space in the Bredgar workshops enabling it to accommodate its customers’ long-term storage in house.
