The Salon

Mahatma Gandhi famously said, “Be the change you want to see in the world”. This quote has become the personal mantra of Amie Wallace, Owner of “The Salon”, specialists in hair, beauty and wellness based on Sheerness High Street.

Amie applies this mantra to her business – she wants to see her local community be fit and healthy, so she has created the Swale Body Challenge, which encourages Swale residents to get into the shape of their life, for life. There were prize incentives worth £1,000 for those successful in a variety of categories such as body fat loss, muscle gain, and best attendance. Amie also want to see young people empowered by being given career opportunities which can unfortunately be all too rare in today’s economic climate. To this end, all three of her full-time employees are apprentices, working closely with her nineteen other members of staff.

Amie spoke about the philosophy of her business: “The idea that underpins The Salon is that we are a family unit and that everyone is invested in the success of the business. Lots of businesses say ‘our employees are like a family’ but for me this is not just words. We are an extremely special force that has grown up together. We are all close friends who travel together; have shared holidays and special memories, have supported each other through marriages and divorces and are godparents to each other’s children. We truly are a family.”

Amie’s philosophy is working, as The Salon is one of only 70 salons in the UK to have been offered sponsorship with Goldwell Professional. They are completely self-sufficient, with business growing every year since they opened in 2013.

When asked why she thought that The Salon should be recognised at the 2016 Swale Business Awards she said, “I believe that in our short time we have had a positive impact on the local community and will continue to do so. I am a young owner with a young team behind me and I want us to break the mould in terms of what we offer our customers, staff and community.”
